Extra Tools for Knitting: Flexible Tape Measures

Description

Once you’ve learned the knitting basics, there are a few extra tools that you’ll need to complete your projects. In this video, Jen Lucas discusses flexible tape measures and their uses in your projects. A tape measure is one of the most important notions you can have in your knitting bag, so you’ll want to know all about them and how to choose the right one for you.

Flexible tape measures come in a variety of lengths and types. The retractable tape measure is useful because it doesn’t take up a lot of space in your knitting bag, and the tape measure won’t become tangled in your yarn or project. If you need to measure something that’s much longer, like the wingspan of a shawl or large afghan, you might find a traditional flexible tape measure useful. These tape measures are typically much longer in length, making it easy to measure your large project. Like many knitting notions, it’s about personal preference and finding the tape measure that works best for you.

Hi, I'm Jen Lucas for "The Knitting Circle." In this video, let's take a look at flexible tape measures. Tape measures are one of those things that are very important to have in your knitting bag. You can use them to measure your gauge, and you can also use them to measure how much you've knit in a sweater or a baby blanket. They're especially useful when you need to know in a project how far you need to knit before you do the next step. So let's go ahead and take a look at tape measures. The flexible tape measure is another tool that you're gonna wanna have, or knitting notion that you're gonna wanna have in your bag. You're going to need to sometimes measure your gauge or if you're working on something, say like a sweater or a baby blanket, you might need to work a certain number of inches or centimeters before going to the next step of your pattern. So with flexible tape measures, again, like many of these knitting notions, it's about preference. I personally like the retractable tape measure that you can just pull out and then it retracts. So it doesn't take up a lot of space. With these, they often only go up to maybe 60 inches or 72 inches. So there are some cases if you're knitting a large shawl or a large afghan that it might not be long enough to measure your project. In that case, you could just, you know, measure twice and add those numbers together. But that is sort of the one downside of the flexible tape measures. Not many of them go beyond 60 or 72 inches. You obviously could just use a regular good, old flexible tape measure. A lot of these do go up higher in terms of their inches and centimeters. This is something that I would have at home, but I wouldn't necessarily personally put in my knitting bag just because I feel like it would end up getting a little bit tangled up with the yarn that was in my bag. But again, it's really personal preference, but a flexible tape measure is something that you're going to definitely find useful to have when you're working on your next knitting project. There you go, like many knitting notions, it really is about preference and which one is right for you. I really like the retractable ones because they don't get tangled up in my knitting. I'm Jen Lucas for "The Knitting Circle." I hope that you enjoyed this video, and we'll see you back here again real soon.
