Extra Tools for Knitting: Needle Caps

Description

Once you’ve learned the knitting basics, there are a few extra tools that you might find helpful to use in your projects. In this video, Jen Lucas shows you a variety of needle caps so you can choose the one that’s right for you. Since they help keep the stitches on your knitting needle when you set down your project, needle caps are an important notion to have in your knitting bag.

Like many knitting notions, there are different options for needle caps or point protectors. It’s important to make sure that you have the right cap for your knitting needle. If using a large needle, you’ll need a larger point protector or cap, for example. There are point protectors that are used for each needle separately and there are also protectors that have two holes, so that you can place both needles into the cap. This type of cap is especially useful when using circular knitting needles.

There are many needle caps to choose from and some work better than others for different knitting projects. Most importantly, use the needle caps that feel right for you and feel the most comfortable to use in your knitting.

Hi there. I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle. In this video, let's take a look at needle caps. One of the worst things that can happen in your knitting is that you throw your knitting project in your bag and when you go to take it back out again, all of the stitches have fallen off the needle. I have been there. It is not good. So in this video, I wanna take a look at needle caps so that you can pick the right one for you and that you won't have that problem of your stitches falling off the needle. Let's take a look. Needle caps or point protectors are another knitting notion that you may wanna have in your bag. This particular notion I find extremely important because the vast majority of knitting projects, you don't finish in one sitting. You're gonna have to set it aside to work on it again later. And I know I have a tendency just to throw it in my bag. And then later I go to pull it back out of the bag and some or all of the stitches have fallen off the needle. You can get your stitches back on the needle, but especially if you're a beginner, that can be a very frustrating thing to have happen. And so just by buying this inexpensive notion, you can solve that problem. So like many knitting notions, there's a few different types and there's even more beyond just what I'm showing here. So it's really just about figuring out which one's the right one for you. So you can see these, they're kind of a rubber material and they have a hole in them. And they're called needle caps or point protectors and they do exactly that. They just go onto the end of your needle. You'll find that they come in different sizes. I have a larger needle here, so these are the large point protectors. If you're using a smaller knitting needle, you're gonna wanna have the smaller point protectors or needle caps, 'cause the big ones will be too big to fit on those smaller needles. So this is just one type. These ones are very similar as well, just basically different brand, different shape. You can even find some that are coils so you can put the little coil around them. Those I use sometimes use for circular needles. These ones are made especially for circular needles like I have here where I can just put the two needles together. And then it has two holes in it and I could just stick it in like this. And it holds my knitting for when I'm ready to pick up my project again. So again, it really is personal preference and just taking a look at the different ones that are out there to figure out which needle cap is right for you. As you can see, there's a variety of needle caps and like many knitting notions, it's about finding the right one for you, the right one for your knitting needle, and really it's all about not having those stitches fall off the needle when you put it into your knitting bag. I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle. I hope that you enjoyed this video and I'll see you back here again real soon.
