Feather and fan stitch patterns, along with Old Shale knitting patterns, create a beautiful wave in your knitted fabric that’s perfect for scarves, shawls, and sweaters. In this video, lace knitter Jen Lucas demonstrates two common stitch patterns that you’re sure to fall in love with and will want to incorporate into your own projects!

17-STITCH PATTERN

Jen begins by working a 17-stitch repeating pattern in a single color. She works all four rows, noting that this is a great beginner stitch pattern.

Worked over a multiple of 17 plus 4 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Knit all sts.
Row 2 (WS): Knit all sts.
Row 3: K2, *k2tog 3 times, (yo, k1) 5 times, yo, ssk 3 times; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 4: K2, purl to the last 2 sts, k2.

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 for pattern.

TWO-COLOR 11-STITCH PATTERN

Jen continues by working a beautiful two-color stitch pattern, where the yarn is changes very four rows.

Worked over a multiple of 11 plus 4 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Knit all sts.
Row 2 (WS): K2, purl to the last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3: K2, *k2tog twice, (yo, k1) 3 times, yo, ssk twice; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 4: Knit all sts.

To work pattern in 2 colors, change colors every 4 rows:

With Color 1, work Rows 1 – 4.
With Color 2, work Rows 1 – 4.

Repeat to desired length.

k2tog: knit two stitches together
p: purl
ssk: slip a stitch as if to knit to right needle, slip a second stitch as if to knit to right needle, slip both stitches back to left needle and knit together through the back loops
