Description

The best way to get an an accurate stitch and row count on your gauge swatch is to knit a swatch larger than the 4″ square you usually needle to measure. This avoids the cast-on, bound-off and side edges where the stitch and row count on your gauge swatch may not be true. Learn more about gauge and how it relates to your pattern here!

Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple. And I wanna talk to you about your gauge Swatch. I know a lot of people don't like to do them, but if you want your garment to fit, you kinda have to, even though your pattern says a certain number of stitches and rows per four inches. I want you to make your gauge swatches a little bit bigger. Six inches would be great. This one's five, but here's why it's really difficult to get an accurate stitch count along the bound off edge, the cast on edge and either side. So if my gauge swatch is at least five inches and again, six is better than when I'm measuring, I can measure in the middle and I'm sure I'm getting the most accurate gauge.
