Slipping a Marker When Knitting

Hi everyone. I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle. In this video I want to take a quick look at slipping stitch markers when knitting. While you're knitting you might need to use your stitch markers for a variety of different reasons. You might use one to mark the beginning of your round, or to mark a pattern repeat so you can keep track of your work. Some people get a little bit confused on how you're supposed to slip your markers, but it's super easy, and so let's go ahead and get started. Slipping a stitch marker in knitting is super easy but it is something that does confuse some people. So I just have a few stitch markers placed here on a plain old stockinette stitch swatch but you might commonly use stitch markers to mark a pattern repeat, particularly in lace it's useful. Or maybe you're working something like a sweater or a shawl where you might need to increase or decrease before or after these markers. But we're gonna go ahead and just focus on dealing with the stitch markers when we get to them. Here I'm just using some locking stitch markers but it doesn't matter which type of stitch marker you have. We have a video on different types of stitch markers so you can figure out which one's the right one for you. But here I just have some locking stitch markers but you might have decorative ones or open ring or closed ring ones, there's all different kinds. So I'm just gonna go ahead and knit along to my first marker. So you would be following your pattern, doing whatever stitches it's telling you to do. I'm just gonna knit. And so when I get to my stitch marker, all I need to do is just slip it, like I would slip a stitch purlwise from the left needle to the right needle. And that's it. And so now you'll notice here I have five stitches. I'm gonna go ahead, knit my five stitches. I come to my stitch marker. I'm just going to slip it purlwise to my right needle. Still got my five stitches here. Gonna go ahead, knit my next five stitches. Come to my next marker. And you guessed it, I'm just going to slip it, from my left needle to my right needle. And that's it. Slipping stitch markers is super easy. That's it. Your stitch markers are there to help you and not confuse you. All you need to do is slip those stitch markers purlwise, almost like you would a stitch, and that's all you have to do. I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle.
